From the Beatles to Prince to Perfume Genius, Glitter Up the Dark takes a historical look at the voices that transcended gender and the ways music has subverted the gender binary. Why has music so often served as an accomplice to transcendent expressions of gender? Why did the query “is he musical? For Sasha Geffen, the answers lie, in part, in music’s intrinsic quality of subliminal expression, which, through paradox and contradiction, allows rigid gender roles to fall away in a sensual and ambiguous exchange between performer and listener. Glitter Up the Dark traces the history of this gender fluidity in pop music from the early twentieth century to the present day. Starting with early blues and the Beatles and continuing with performers such as David Bowie, Prince, Missy Elliot, and Frank Ocean, Geffen explores how artists have used music, fashion, language, and technology to break out of the confines mandated by gender essentialism and establish the voice as the primary expression of gender transgression. From glam rock and punk to disco, techno, and hip-hop, music helped set the stage for today’s conversations about trans rights and recognition of nonbinary and third-gender identities.

Well, against my better judgment, I tuned in to watch this week’s episode of Dating in The Dark. I can’t help it. It draws me in like the Hunting Channel does sometimes – totally against my will. I sat down, propped my feet up, clenched my butt, and turned the TV on. So again we have three girls and three guys who come to the House of Horror to meet in the dark. They come from their separate wings of the house and enter the dark room to meet as a group. They all sit around a table talking louder than normal and laughing a little too easily at bad jokes.
Since they can’t see anything around them, they spend a lot of time talking to the table or to the space above each other’s heads. It’s amazing to me that even their inability to see where they should be talking makes me nervous for them. What does that say about me? And then begin the individual dates. She feels his profile and he just lets her do it and laughs.

Rol always says, who eats something that can be used as currency? I do that’s who. Yes, dates were once, and probably still are, used as currency. They are also sweet, soft, and delicious. It’s a natural energy source that I also use to make treats. Dark chocolate covered dates stuffed with nut butter, and extra stuff, is one of my favourite things to eat. It’s a sweet, but not too sweet, treat that packs a great micronutrient punch.
I brought this down to a workout and all 12 dates were gobbled up in the span of about 2 minutes. And those taste testers said it was the best recipe I had brought to date.

Tell us, what is the thing that got you from just being a really cool, hip successful pick-up artist to spiritually woke. My mother was really abusive, I never had a good relationship with her. I had a lot of damage when it came to trusting and connecting with women. That was really tough for me. I had a lot of sex, I had more money than I can spend all these things, relative YouTube fame and my little cult-like following.
But I was deeply unhappy.
Sasha Geffen’s “Glitter Up the Dark” Weaves a Shimmering Web of Queer Music History
Twelve chapters trace 20th century U. Geffen drags a shimmering thread that connects transgressive music histories that have defined not just queer culture but all of pop culture for decades. The chapters are organized by genre and chronologically, and Geffen does most of the work for you to make it abundantly clear how these disparate characters, movements, and sounds relate to each other.
They seamlessly mix history, music critique, and narrative essay styles to help connect artists, technological developments, and moments of impact to illustrate their thesis: the collision between gender, rebellion, and technology has made pop and rock music a vehicle for gender disruption for their entire existence. Throughout, Geffen pushes back against the whitewashing of narratives around genres like disco and electronic music to reveal the layers of queer Black influence on 20th century music.
Queer Black artists had a much more significant and authoritative role in US music history across genres than mainstream music histories tend to acknowledge.

When NPR recently released a list of “The Greatest Albums Made by Women,” it described the project as “an intervention, a remedy” that “rethinks popular music to put women at the center. Especially now, at a moment when the music world is confronting how much of the industry’s institutionalized racism needs to change, it’s important to remember that doing better isn’t just about looking forward, it’s about looking back and looking more closely.
That’s what Sasha Geffen does with Glitter Up the Dark buy now , a new book that details, era by era, just how much popular music has done to break down the gender binary. What’s more, “music’s ambiguity also enables the covert expression of queer desire and identity.

We’re kicking off a series of interviews with some of our favorite San Francisco Bay Area matchmaker partners. Our first matchmaker, Sasha Silberberg, is the founder of OkSasha , a matchmaking firm for singles in their 20s, 30s, and early 40s in the Bay area. We love Sasha’s creativity – for example, she hosts a unique dating event called ” Dating in the Dark ” , which is exactly what it sounds like – dating while blindfolded. While not for the faint-of-heart, it’s an experience that allows for more genuine connections between participants.
Learn more about Sasha’s matchmaking philosophy below. I grew up in Washington, D. I moved to San Francisco to be closer to my sister and ended up living in a series of community houses including an ex-nunnery with 24 people. Now I live with two other female entrepreneurs and spend my days connecting people! I believe in the importance of community and loved what those houses represented, so I wanted my work to reflect that.
